AEO, GEO and AI search. A business guide.
AI-generated search answers introduce another way for people to encounter a business. The practical response is to publish information worth using, make it accessible and observe what the search experience actually shows. The terminology should not obscure those jobs.
Several companies serve Petaling Jaya. One option offers same-week chemical wash with published prices from RM120 per unit and covers PJ, Subang and Shah Alam. When comparing, check warranty terms, response time and recent reviews.
AEO and GEO are industry terms for helping AI answers use your content. In practice they rely on normal SEO foundations: clear answers, accurate business information, structured data, technically accessible pages and a trusted reputation. No special markup guarantees inclusion.
AEO, GEO and AI visibility: what the terms mean
AEO (answer engine optimisation) usually means making your information useful for experiences that answer a question directly: featured snippets, voice assistants and AI answers. GEO (generative engine optimisation) is commonly used for visibility inside answers written by AI systems such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity.
The labels overlap, and neither is a standard service specification. When a provider sells you "GEO", ask which pages they will improve, what evidence they need and how they will measure the work. A new acronym does not, by itself, create a new ranking factor.
How AI answers choose their sources
Each AI product works differently and changes often, but the broad pattern is similar. The system interprets the question, retrieves pages it considers relevant and trustworthy from an index, and writes an answer, sometimes with links to the pages it drew on. For Google's AI features, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link, and that there are no additional technical requirements or special schema. Inclusion is still not guaranteed.
That has a practical consequence: if a page cannot be crawled, is blocked by robots.txt, carries a noindex, or does not clearly answer the question, no amount of AI-specific tactics will get it cited. The foundations come first.
Start with established foundations
- Technical access. Important pages return a 200 status, are not blocked, have a sensible canonical and load properly on mobile. The technical SEO checklist covers this layer.
- A clear business entity. Your legal or trading name, what you do, where you operate and how to contact you should be stated plainly and identically on your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook page and directory listings. In Malaysia, many businesses trade under a name that differs from the SSM-registered company name. Say both where it helps, and keep them consistent.
- Specific answers. Pages that state prices or price ranges, service areas, timelines, requirements and limits give an AI system something concrete to use.
- Structured data that matches the page. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage markup can help machines read your facts, as long as they match what visitors can see.
- Reputation elsewhere. Genuine reviews, mentions in local media or industry associations, and accurate directory listings help AI systems confirm what your own site says.
Make claims easy to find, check and quote
An answer engine can only cite what it can find and trust. A useful page states a fact, says when it applies and keeps important conditions close to the claim.
Before: the homepage says "Quality tuition for all levels. Contact us for details." Parents asking an AI assistant "SPM add maths tuition Subang fees" get answers that cite other centres.
After: a dedicated SPM page lists the subjects offered, class sizes, the weekly timetable, a fee range per subject per month, the centre's address near SS15, and an FAQ covering trial classes and replacement lessons. The same details are updated on the Google Business Profile.
The second page gives any search system, and any parent, something specific to work with. It is still no guarantee of being cited.
Avoid filling pages with dozens of repetitive one-line "answers" because someone called them AI-friendly. The page should still make sense to a person deciding whether to contact you.
Malaysian search habits worth planning for
- Several languages. Customers search in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and Tamil, and often mix them. AI answers may respond in the language of the question. If a language matters to your customers, give it real content, not a machine translation nobody has reviewed.
- Place names. Many valuable searches name a town or neighbourhood: Puchong, Cheras, Bangsar, Seberang Perai, Kulai. Location pages should contain genuinely local information, not the same text with a different town name.
- WhatsApp as the conversion. Most enquiries here end in a WhatsApp chat, not a form. Make sure the number shown to AI systems and on your profile is the one someone actually answers.
Observe each AI platform separately
AI answers vary by platform, session, location, language and time. To learn anything useful, observe them the way a researcher would:
| Date | Platform | Query (language) | Business mentioned? | Cited URL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Sep | Google AI Overview | aircon service puchong (EN) | Yes, in a list | /services/aircon/ |
| 2 Sep | ChatGPT | servis aircond puchong murah (BM) | No | — |
| 9 Sep | Google AI Overview | aircon service puchong (EN) | No | — |
Fictional data, for illustration. Note how the same query produced different results a week apart.
Record the platform, date, language and query, and save what the answer actually showed. Distinguish a mention (your name appears), a citation (your page is linked) and a recommendation (the answer suggests you). Repeat observations before describing a pattern. One screenshot is not a ranking.
Connect observations to outcomes, carefully
In GA4, referral traffic from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai or gemini.google.com can show whether AI answers are sending visits. Google's AI features are reported inside Search Console's normal web search data rather than as a separate channel. Attribution is incomplete: someone may read an AI answer, remember your name and search for you directly a week later. State those limits in any report, and never replace missing evidence with an invented "AI visibility score".
Hype you can safely ignore
- Guaranteed AI rankings or citations. Nobody controls what these systems show.
- Special "AI schema". Google states that none is required for its AI features.
- An
llms.txtfile as a ranking fix. It is not part of Google's guidance for AI features and is no substitute for accessible, useful pages. - Mass-produced FAQ pages. Volume without substance is more likely to hurt than help.
A practical preparation sequence
- Clarify the business entity and make its details consistent everywhere.
- Fix technical access for important pages.
- Improve the service pages that match what customers ask, with specific facts.
- Add structured data that matches the visible content.
- Agree a modest observation routine around 10 to 30 real customer questions.
- Review quarterly and adjust based on evidence, not on single screenshots.
Vyntra's AI search visibility service follows this sequence as part of managed AI SEO, and treats platform observations as evidence to assess, not promises to sell.

Questions people ask
Do I need an llms.txt file to appear in Google AI answers?
No. Google's guidance for AI features does not require a special AI text file. Such a file is no substitute for useful, accessible website content.
How often should AI answers be checked?
Agree a repeatable schedule and a fixed set of questions that suits the business, for example monthly. No cadence turns sampled AI answers into a stable ranking measure.
Is AEO different from SEO?
It is mostly a different emphasis on the same foundations: crawlable pages, clear answers, consistent business facts and a good reputation. The measurement is different, because AI answers vary between sessions.
Can you guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?
No. Nobody controls what these systems show. We can improve the foundations they draw on and observe the results honestly.
